Clarity can come through pain.
There was heat, from the blood or from the rage. Squinting through a swollen face and dripping blood, Nulreu could just see past his assailants. They had surrounded Eilra as well and were quickly beating him into submission. Nulreu pressed on, past the pain. Another blow, this one a cudgel to his side. The world spun momentarily. Nulreu grabbed one of the fiends by the throat, shoving it aside. He inched toward Eilra, the only friend he had. But even as he struggled, he knew he wouldn’t make it in time.
Nulreu awoke in intense pain, his face smashed, bleeding and incoherent. Left for dead. Laying several yards from his lay Eilra. Summoning what strength remaining, Nulreu crawled toward what must be his lifeless friend. And then blackness.
Nulrue awoke again. Perhaps hours later, perhaps days. Refusing to accept the truth. Refusing to leave his friend, he called out to the earth for justice. But in his heart… he knew it had been his own failure. He couldnt drive them back, he couldn’t stand his ground. They had overwhelmed him and then moved on to Eilra. So, Nulreu waited to die. To pay the price for his failure. The hard stone of Garundel lay beneath him, while a cold wet snow began to fall insultingly on his brocken form.
Yet, the earth must have heard his plea. When Nulrue awoke again he was not alone. Blinking into the sun and through his bloodshot, swollen eyes; he saw above him a large, thin serpentine face. Grey, stony.. as if carved from the mountain on which he now lay.
It was here that the mysterious dragon Il’farent’ahoul Traygenn (Farent) decided to aid Nulrue. The goliath’s blood had seeped through the stone and called out to Farent. In time he would teach Nulreu how to harness the stone for protection, strength and even knowledge.
